The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating consumer complaints about battery cables in the 2005 Volvo XC90 SUV.
The complaints focus on the main cable that connects the battery to the starter. In some cases, a nut may come loose and detach the cable from the starter or the starter fails to operate, according to Volvo North America Corp.
NHTSA reports that in some cases smoke was observed coming from overheated cables.
The preliminary investigation will involve 39,500 vehicles. There have been no crashes, fires or injuries linked to the complaints.
