Toyota Recalls Highlander, Lexus RX SUVs

July 13, 2006
The Toyota Motor Corp. is recalling the Highlander and Lexus RX SUVs because clips holding down the floor carpeting were improperly installed.

If the clips come loose, the carpeting could move and interfere with the action of the vehicles' accelerator pedal.

The carpeting could cause the accelerator pedal to become stuck in a partially depressed position.

The vehicles involved are 2004 and 2005 model year Toyota Highlanders and Lexus RX330 SUVs. Some 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX400h SUVs are also involved.

Toyota will begin notifying owners later this month and dealers will install stronger versions of two clips that hold the carpeting in place.

The recall is the automaker's second this week. Toyota is also recalling 157,000 Tundra pickups to remove a switch that turned off passenger-side air bags.
