The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recalled 304,675 Graco Snugride child restraint systems manufactured from August 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007 because of a potential choking hazard caused by fiber backing that is part of the seats.
The recalled seats are model numbers 8609, 8616, 8643, 8645, and 8646.
NHTSA said the fiber backing in these seats are of lesser density and may be more prone to deterioration or tearing, especially after washing. The particular design of the seat pad may allow more ready access to the underside of the padding.
An infant passenger in the seat may remove pieces of the fiber fill from the back of the seat pad, place it in their mouths, thus creating a potential choking hazard, according to the agency.
Graco will notify registered owners of the seats and offer a replacement kit free of charge. Owners of the infant seats can contact Graco at 1-800-345-4109 Monday through Friday.
